MENTAL HEALTH

Is there a role for UV radiation and Green Space? Neil Nedley, M.D.

Vitamin D and depression:

In a study of 185 Undergraduate college “healthy” women

Most had vitamin D insufficiency, and that depressive symptoms were predicted by vitamin D levels

Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency occur at high rates in healthy young women, and lower vitamin D3 levels are related to clinically significant depressive symptoms

Low serum levels of vitamin D are associated with clinically significant symptoms of depression in otherwise healthy individuals has receptors that are distributed in brain areas involved in emotional processing and affective disorders. (Psychiatry Research, March 6, 2016, David Kerr)

Dealing with Depression by Neil Nedley, M.D.

Depression is considered an epidemic, so common that it is now the number one cause of disability worldwide, resulting in time off work and loss of productivity.

Major Depression requires 5 of 9 symptoms during the past two weeks:

1. Deep sadness, or emptiness most of the time

2. Apathy, no excited about the day, lose interest in things you did enjoy

3. Weight or appetite changes, weight gain mostly using sugary foods

4. Agitation, more irritably than previously

5. Sleep disturbances, lack of sleep, or too much sleep

6. Lack of concentration, short memory

7. Feelings of worthlessness

8. Morbid thoughts, preoccupation with death

9. Fatigue, no energy for the day

If you have 5 of the 9 for the majority of the time during the past two weeks, you have major depression

If you have 2 of the 9 for the majority of the time during the past two weeks, you have minor depression

It is normal variance to have 1 of the nine

Effects of Depression:

Increase risk of mortality, stroke, heart attack, death from cancer, death from pneumonia, and death from suicide

Depression is the number cause of suicide

Causes loss of income yearly and financial strain on families.

Depression causes social complications with relationships with family members, co-workers, friends, etc.

There are many difference causes of depression. Over a hundreds different causes condensed into 10 categories of causes. If you have 4 categories of causes you will have depression. 8 out of 10 categories are completely reversible

and having only 2 categories of causes is not enough to cause depression. There is hope for everyone with depression.

1. Genetic cause: not proven a common cause by itself

2. How we are raised: with trauma, abuse, and unloving environment. These first two causes are not reversible.

3. Lifestyle causes: regular exercise helps the brain, using our hands doing tasks, getting enough bright light and fresh air outdoors

4. Sleep/wake cycle: regular schedule with early to bed best

5. Addiction: alcohol, gambling, caffeine, pornography etc.

6. Nutrition: eat foods rich in tryptophan (pumpkin seeds, gluten, soy, tofu,) tyrosine (watermelon, mustard greens, spirulina) omega-3 (chia seeds, flax seed, spinach) use plant based diet as much as possible

7. Toxic: mercury very toxic in sea foods

8. Social: isolated, significant stress

9. Medical conditions: thyroid condition, post traumatic head injury

10 Frontal Lobe: spirituality, morality, and will play a role. A drop in circulation in the frontal lobe is a factor with everyone with depression.  To improve frontal lobe function: change the type of music you listen to, discontinue watching rapid changing TV programs, analyze spiritual materials like reading the Bible. There is less chance of depression for those who read and think about the Bible teachings and if they have depression, recovery is much quicker.

Everyone is prone to depression and getting help early is the key to rapid recovery.

Depression can cause medical conditions like:

Asthma, chronic headaches (migraine or tension), increased risk of physical disability, memory loss

The most common treatment for depression is medicine, limited effectiveness, only 13% treated with medicine get improved function, 20% have a lifting of their bad mood, 30% won’t get better at all with any medicine (treatment resistant) 50% improve somewhat but still have symptoms of major depression

The way out of depression: First acknowledge that you have depression, finding the causes active in you, getting on comprehensive treatment regimen that reverses the causes.

Solution: The way out works for everyone regardless of nationality, race, or culture.

1. Determine the underlying causes

2. Getting on a physical fitness program

3. Getting on a bright light therapy outdoor activities, morning time the best

4. Getting to bed early and rise early to reset circadian rhythm

5. Nutritional aspect very important

6. Increase circulation and function of our frontal lobe: reduce TV, read good books, eliminate music with heavy beat or syncopation replace with soothing melodies and harmonies like harp, classical music, improve spiritual function

    7. Get social support in a therapy group, improve cognitive behavioral therapy

Depression and anxiety should not be tolerated as a lifelong condition. There is a way out of both of these disorders, and there is help available once you find the underlying causes, than have them reversed. You will live a far more successful life not only relationally but financially and physically. So don’t wait for the complications of depression, get on the pathway of optimal mental health.

ALZHEIMER’S and COGNITIVE DECLINE

Lecture by Dr. Wes Youngberg “Clinical Application of Lifestyle Medicine Strategies to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline Associated With Alzheimer’s Disease”

Top 3 causes of PREMATURE death in USA:

1. Cardiovascular disease

2. Cancer

3. Alzheimer’s

Many believe Alzheimer’s is genetic and nothing can be done about this disease. By analyzing genetic code (23andme.com), and ancestry.com) individually risks can be evaluated. Genes that increase risk can be turned off and good genes that promote good health can be turned on by lifestyle and dietary changes (epi-genetics). Significant improvements can be made in most all cases.

It is best to start implementing a strategy as soon as a person notes decline in memory or cognitive function. Many start noting changes after age 45 years old.

We can become masters of our genome instead of victims as many have believed and taught.

According to a recent study: Mild vitamin D deficiency resulted in 51% increase risk for dementia, and a 125% increase risk for dementia if vitamin D levels were very low. Learn how much supplementation of Vitamin D you need, use this calculator:  Vitamin D calculator

Avoid all alcohol.  A study published in June, 2017 “Moderate alcohol consumption as risk factor for adverse brain outcomes and cognitive decline: a longitudinal cohort study”

The study reports: 1-2 drinks/day resulted in a 580% increased risk, with no protective benefit consuming 1-3 drinks per week.

Insulin resistance is one of the most significant metabolic drivers toward cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s.  Dr. Youngberg recommends a 4-hour Glucose Tolerance Test, which also assesses blood levels of insulin at fasting, 1 hour, 2 hours, and assesses cortisol levels at fasting, 3 hours, and 4 hours.

Take the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test FREE.  Someone needs to administer this test for you. Results: 26-30 points = normal, 16-25 points = mild cognitive decline, 0-15 points = Alzheimer’s.  Click Here for PDF file
